The author of the paper under review proves that for \(K^{1/3}\leq G\leq K\) and for any \(\varepsilon>0\) that \[ \sum_{\substack{ k\mathrm{ even}\\ K\leq k\leq K+G}} \sum\limits_{f\in H_k}\left| L\left(\tfrac{1}{2},\mathrm{sym}^2f\right)\right|^2\ll_\varepsilon K^{1+\varepsilon}G, \] where \(H_k\) is a basis of holomorphic cuspidal Hecke eigenforms of weight \(k\) for the full modular group \(\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb Z)\), and \(\mathrm{sym}_2f\) is the symmetric square lift of such a form. The above \(L\)-function can be defined as the analytic continuation to \(s\in\mathbb C\) of \[ L(s,\mathrm{sym}^2f)=\zeta(2s)\sum\limits^\infty_{n=1}\frac{\lambda_f(n^2)}{n^s}, \] which converges absolutely when \(\mathrm{Re}(s)>1\), and where \(\lambda_f(n)\) are the Hecke eigenvalues of \(f\) normalized so that \(|\lambda_f (n)|\leq d(n)\), the number of divisors of \(n\). This result improves on a result of \textit{W. Luo} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 140, No. 10, 3313--3322 (2012; Zbl 1307.11058)], who proved the same estimate with \(G=K^{1/2}\). The proof of the theorem follows the method of \textit{W. Luo} and \textit{P. Sarnak} found in [Commun. Pure Appl. Math. 56, No. 7, 874--891 (2003; Zbl 1044.11022)].
