      Consider the linear difference equation (1) \(x(n+1)=A(n)x(n)\) where A(n) is a \(k\times k\) invertible matrix function for \(n\in Z=\{...,- 1,0,1,...\}\). The author gives necessary and sufficient conditions in terms of Lyapunov functions for the linear difference equation (1) to have exponential dichotomy on the set of integer numbers. The results obtained here are discrete analogues of earlier results given by \textit{J. S. Muldowney} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 283, 465-484 (1984; Zbl 0559.34049)] and \textit{W. A. Coppel} [J. Differ. Equations 52, 58-65 (1984; Zbl 0525.34042)].
