The paper is concerned with the interaction between an isolated patch of vorticity and a distant interface separating two regions of uniform vorticity for an ideal 2D fluid. A general theory is given under the asymptotic assumption that the interface deformation is small. An energy balance calculation indicates that the result of such an interaction is a radiative transfer of energy from the vortex patch to the interface. Two examples, demonstrating that radiative interactions destabilize periodic or perturbed steady solutions, are given.
