For a square-free integer \(m>0\), denote by h(m) the class number (in the wide sense) of the real quadratic field \({\mathbb{Q}}(\sqrt{m})\). Recently, the reviewer [Proc. Int. Conf., Katata/Jap. 1986, 125-137 (1986; Zbl 0612.12010)] and \textit{S. Louboutin} [Prime producing quadratic polynomials and class number of real quadratic fields. I, Can. J. Math. 42, No.2, 315-341 (1990; Zbl 0711.11041)] gave a necessary and sufficient condition for \(h(m)=1\) in each case \(m=4p^ 2+1\), \(p^ 2+4\) and \(p(p+1)\) (p: an odd prime) in terms of prime producing quadratic polynomials. The author intends to improve this result by using ``reduced quadratic irrational'', and proves for instance that in case \(m=4p^ 2+1\), \(h(m)=1\) if and only if \(-n^ 2+n+p^ 2\) is prime for any integer n satisfying \(\sqrt{p+1}\leq n\leq p-1\).
