The authors are mainly concerned with practical consequences of adapting the method of \textit{W. Dahmen} and \textit{C. A. Micchelli} [Multivariate splines - a new constructive approach, in: R. E. Barnhill and W. Boehm eds., Surfaces in Computer Aided Geometric Design, Proc. Conf. Oberwolfach 1982, 191-215 (1985; Zbl 0516.65001)] using Hermite B-splines with redundant knots. First they show how to generate singularities of given types by making some knots linearly dependent. Then they discuss practical rules for choosing knots and apply their method to the effective modeling of scattered data.
