The Lie-algebraic description of continuously distributed dislocations is linked to the global affine invariance of their tensorial density. Static field equations which describe distributions of stresses and couple stresses are derived from a Lagrangian formulation. The formal analogy between this approach to the theory of dislocations and classical electrodynamics is discussed.
