Let F be a family of analytic self-mappings of a bounded, convex domain D in the complex plane, suppose that \(f_ n\in F\) for \(n=1,2,...\), and consider the sequence \(\phi_ n=f_ 1\circ f_ 2\circ...\circ f_ n\), \(n=1,2,..\).. It is shown that if each \(f\in F\) has a continuous extension to \(\bar D\) (the closure of D), if \(| f'(z)| \leq 1\) for all \(z\in D\) and \(f\in F\), and if there exists \(z_ 0\in D\) such that \(\sup_{f\in F} | f'(z_ 0)| <1\), then each sequence \(\phi_ n\) of the above form converges to a constant in \(\bar D\) as \(n\to \infty\). Various alternatives to the condition \(\sup_{f\in F} | f'(z_ 0)| <1\) are also given. Moreover, it is shown that if, in addition to the above hypotheses, D is a disc, then \(diam(\phi_ n(D))=O(1/\sqrt{n})\). Here O(1/\(\sqrt{n})\) cannot be replaced by o(1/n), as shown by an example. These results generalize a result of \textit{W. J. Thron} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 8, 1040-1043 (1958; Zbl 0081.057)] dealing with the special case that the \(f_ n\) are of the form \(f_ n(z)=\exp (b_ nz)\) as well as a result of the authors [Complex Variables, Theory Appl. 12, 181-206 (1989; 644.30014)].
