Let \(KK^ j(A,B)\) \((j=0,1)\) be the Kasparov group for separable, trivially graded \(C^*\)-algebras A and B. The author shows an abstract Bott periodicity theorems in terms of the \(C^*\)-algebras qA in \textit{J. Cuntz} [K-theory 1, 31-51 (1987; Zbl 0636.55001)] and \(\epsilon\) A in the author's paper [J. Funct. Anal. 84, 441-471 (1989; Zbl 0686.46043)]. Here, the algebra qA means the ideal of QA (the free product of A by itself generated by the symbols \(\{\iota\) (a),\(\tau\) (a)\(|\) \(a\in A\})\) generated by \(\{\iota\) (a)-\(\tau\) (a)\(|\) \(a\in A\}\) and \(\epsilon\) A means the crossed product qA\(\rtimes_{\tau}Z_ 2\) by the restriction of the automorphism \(\tau\) of QA which exchanges the two copies of A. It is then known in those papers that \[ KK^ 0(A,B)\cong [qA,{\mathcal K}\otimes B]\text{ and } KK^ 1(A,B)\cong [\epsilon A,{\mathcal K}\otimes B], \] where bracket denotes the set of homotopy classes of homomorphisms for relevant algebras and \({\mathcal K}\) the algebra of compact operators. In this setting, the author defines the abstract Bott elements for A and B and shows that \({\mathcal K}\otimes qA\) and \({\mathcal K}\otimes \epsilon^ 2A\) \((\epsilon^ 2A=\epsilon (\epsilon A))\) are homotopy equivalent, that is, qA and \(\epsilon^ 2A\) are KK-equivalent (Theorem 1-10).
