Let L(X) denote the algebra of all bounded linear operators on a Banach space X and, given a subset \({\mathcal S}\) of L(X), let Alg Lat \({\mathcal S}\) denote the set of all \(T\in L(X)\) which leave invariant every \({\mathcal S}\)- invariant closed linear subspace of X. The subset \({\mathcal S}\) is said to be reflexive if Alg Lat \({\mathcal S}\) equals the w-closed unital subalgebra of L(X) generated by \({\mathcal S}\), where w denotes the weak operator topology. In the present paper, it is shown that, if K is a compact Hausdorff space and m is a bounded unital representation of C(K) on X, then m(C(K)) is reflexive. Also, every bounded Boolean algebra of projections on X is reflexive. These results extend classical results due to W. G. Bade. In proving them, the authors consider the second dual of C(K) with the Arens product and the representation of this Banach algebra induced by m on the dual space of X. An asymptotic version of reflexivity is also introduced as follows. A net \(\{M_{\lambda}\}\) of closed subspaces of X is asymptotically invariant for \(T\in L(X)\) if \(\| \pi_{\lambda}\circ (T| M_{\lambda})\| \to 0\), where \(\pi_{\lambda}\) is the quotient map \(X\to X/M_{\lambda}\). The subset \({\mathcal S}\) of L(X) is approximately reflexive if the set of all \(T\in L(X)\) that leave asymptotically invariant every asymptotically \({\mathcal S}\)-invariant net of closed subspaces of X is equal to the norm closed unital subalgebra of L(X) generated by \({\mathcal S}\). It is shown that, with m, K and B as above, m(C(K)) and B are both approximately reflexive. A similar notion of the approximate double commutant of a subset of L(X) is also investigated briefly. The paper ends with a short discussion of various open problems.
