The authors study axial motions of slender rods. They consider for such rods a unidimensional theory in which the spatial and temporal derivatives of the local stretch influence the tension. The implications of their results for traveling waves are discussed. Among other results the authors conclude that for neo-Hookean materials, solitary waves are given by an elementary formula and periodic waves by elliptic integrals of the third kind.
