    Let \(F(x,y)=f^{-1}(f(x)+f(y))\) be a formal group over an integral domain R, where f(x)\(\in R[[x]]\) and \(f(x)=x(mod x^ 2)\); write \(f'(x)=\sum^{\infty}_{n=1}a_ nx^{n-1}\) and let \(L_ F(s)=\sum^{\infty}_{n=1}a_ nn^{-s}\). The author proves that \(L_ G(s)=\sum^{\infty}_{n=1}\chi (n)n^{-s}\), where \(\chi\) is a Dirichlet character of conductor m and G is a formal group isomorphic to \(F(x,y)=x+y+\tau (\chi^{-1})xy;\) here \(\tau (\chi)=\sum_{a mod m}\chi (a)\exp (2\pi ia/m)\) is the classical Gauss sum. For a quadratic character \(\chi\) this result was obtained by \textit{T. Honda} [Osaka J. Math. 5, 199-213 (1968; Zbl 0169.376)].
