An atomic integral domain \(R\) is called a half-factorial domain (HFD) if an equality of the form \(a_ 1\cdots a_ k=b_ 1\cdots b_{\ell}\) with irreducible \(a_ i\), \(b_ j\) can hold only if \(k=1\). \(R\) is called a congruence half-factorial domain (CHFD) if there exists an integer \(r>1\) such that the above equality implies \(k\equiv 1\pmod r\). The authors study these properties and show in particular that for the existence of a Dedekind domain with finite ideal class-group \(H\) which is CHFD but not HFD it is necessary and sufficient that \(H\) is not isomorphic to \(\mathbb Z_ m\) or \(\mathbb Z^ 2_ m\) with \(m=2,3\).
