This paper is a continuation of a series of papers by the author [cf. J. Algebra 96, 9-17 (1985; Zbl 0603.17005), 122, 81-97 (1989; Zbl 0677.17006), 123, 171-184 (1989; Zbl 0677.17007) and Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 106, 81-86 (1989; Zbl 0681.17007)] in which he studies the arithmetic of weight spaces of highest weight modules in the root lattice of a Lie algebra. The main result is a combinatorial formula relating the number of weights which are sums of nonsimple roots to a version of Kostant's partition function.
