The notion of one-block property is introduced. A class of algebras \({\mathcal K}\) has the one-block property (strong one-block property) if every algebra \(A\in {\mathcal K}\) satisfies: Every minimal nonidentical congruence on A has exactly one nonsingleton class (one nonsingleton class consisting of two elements, respectively). It is proved that whenever a class \({\mathcal K}\) closed under homomorphic images has the one- block property then the lattice of all congruences of any algebra from K is semimodular. Further, characterizations are given of regular and irregular semigroup varieties which have the strong one-block property. For example, a regular variety of semigroups \({\mathcal V}\) has the strong one-block property if and only if \(x^{n+1}=x^ n\), \((xy)^ n=(yx)^ n\) hold in \({\mathcal V}\) for some n.
