    Let \(G=*_ ZG_ i\) be an amalgamated product of discrete abelian groups \(G_ i\) over a common subgroup Z such that the index of Z in each \(G_ i\) is infinite whenever \(G_ i\) is infinite. Denote by \({\mathcal M}\) the collection of all infinite maximal-abelian subgroups of G. If \(H\in {\mathcal M}\), then either H is self-normalizing or it has index 2 in its normalizer N(H). Let us write \({\mathcal M}_+=\{H\in {\mathcal M}:\) \(N(H)=H\}\), and \({\mathcal M}_ -=\{H\in {\mathcal M}:| N(H)/H| =2\}\). If \(H\in {\mathcal M}_ -\), then \(H=Z\times <h>\) for some \(h\in H\), and \(ghg^{- 1}=z_ 0h^{-1}\) for some \(z_ 0\) in Z and for every g in N(H)\(\setminus H.\) This paper studies representations of G induced from characters of \(H\in {\mathcal M}\). It is proved that, if \(\chi\),\(\psi\) are unitary characters of H,K\(\in {\mathcal M}\) respectively, then \(Ind^ G_ H\chi\) and \(Ind^ G_ K\chi\) are either equivalent or disjoint. They are equivalent if and only if K is a conjugate of H, and \(\psi\) is the corresponding conjugate representation of \(\chi\). Moreover, \(Ind^ G_ H\chi\) is irreducible if \(H\in {\mathcal M}_+\). If \(H\in {\mathcal M}_ -\), \(H=Z\times <h>\), then \(Ind^ G_ H\chi\) is irreducible if \(\chi (h)^ 2\neq \chi (z_ 0)\), and decomposes as the direct sum of two irreducibles otherwise. In particular, for every \(H\in {\mathcal M}\), \(Ind^ G_ H\chi\) is irreducible for almost every \(\chi\) with respect to Haar measure \(d\chi\) on H. Finally, the regular representation \(\lambda_ G\) admits the direct integral decomposition \(\lambda_ G\simeq \int^{\oplus}_{\hat H}Ind^ G_ H\chi d\chi\). If H,K\(\in {\mathcal M}\) are not conjugate, then the corresponding direct integral decompositions of \(\lambda_ G\) are disjoint (recall that, in nontrivial cases, G is not a type I group, and \(\lambda_ G\) has many different integral decompositions).
