In order to prove the existence of global classical solutions to nonlinear initial boundary value problems so-called \({\mathcal L}^ p-{\mathcal L}^ q\) estimates of the solutions of the corresponding linear problems are important. The present paper is concerned with the damped plate equation \(u_{tt}+\Delta^ 2u+u_ t=0\), \(t\geq 0\) in an exterior domain \(\Omega \subset {\mathbb{R}}^ n\) with smooth boundary and Dirichlet boundary values. By virtue of the disspipative term the author does not need to require that the complement of \(\Omega\) is star-shaped, but that \(n\geq 5\). He first proves a local energy decay and combines it with \({\mathcal L}^ p-{\mathcal L}^ q\) estimates of the corresponding Cauchy problem.
