The questions of approximation of function of two variables by a sum of products of functions of one variable in the Lebesgue space \(L_ 2\) were studied by E. Schmidt (1907), \textit{M. R. Ŝura-Bura} [Vychislit. Mat. 2, 3-19 (1957; Zbl 0088.046)], \textit{R. D. Baglai} and \textit{K. K. Smirnov} [Zh. Vych. Mat. Mat. Fiz. 15, 241-248 (1975; Zbl 0339.65009)], the author [ibid. 18, 1307-1308 (1978; Zbl 0409.41008)] and others. This method has obtained the highest spreading in figure processing of pictures where it is called SVD-method (singular value decomposition). In the present paper the problem of approximation of function of two variables by a sum of products of functions of one variable in Sobolev spaces \(W^ 1_ 2\), \(\overset \circ W^ 1_ 2\) and \(W_ 2^{1,1}\), \(\overset \circ W_ 2^{1,1}\) in the square \(G=[0,1]\times [0,1]\) is considered. This problem is reduced to the minimizing of some quadratic functional on the unit sphere or on a more complicated set.
