Madsen showed that the Pontryagin classes \(p_ k mod 2^ 3\) are homotopy invariant. Using Bockstein spectral sequences the author proves the following generalization: For all \(k\geq 1\), \(r\geq 0\) the classes \(p_ k^{2^ r} mod 2^{r+3}\) are homotopy invariant. Furthermore he shows for all \(k\geq 1\), \(r\geq 1\) the homotopy invariance of the classes \(p_ k^{3^{r-1}} mod 3^ r\). For \(r=1\) this is a result of Wu. Finally he proves the topological invariance of the classes \(p_ k mod 5\).
