    A mapping F: \(R^ n\to R^ n\) is a Z-function (or off-diagonally antitone) if \(x\geq y\) and \(x_ i=y_ i\) implies \(F_ i(x)\leq F_ i(y)\), and F is superhomogeneous if F(\(\alpha\) x)\(\geq \alpha F(x)\) for any \(\alpha\geq 1\). The main result of this paper states that when F is a continuous, superhomogeneous Z-function on a set \(D\supset R^ n_+\) then the two statements are equivalent: (i) the system \(F(x)=c\) has a solution for every \(c\in R^ n_+\), (ii) F is strictly semimonotone for \(x\in R^ n_+\); that is, for each \(x\in R^ n_+\), \(x\neq 0\) there exists an i such that \(x_ iF_ i(x)>0\). Moreover, if either condition holds then for any \(c>0\) the system has exactly one solution.
