The author considers a bounded linear elastic material on the surface of which time dependent mixed boundary conditions are imposed. The question of the surface displacements satisfying a d'Alembertian equation is studied. Extending the earlier results of Duvaut and Lions, Inoue and others and using essentially similar methods, the author establishes the existence of a weak solution under relatively general limitations of the initial time conditions and the spatial boundary conditions. An interesting observation is that the speed of propagation of the disturbance is closely related to the speed of the Rayleigh wave. Besides the main result, the author also discusses a number of associated problems of the existence of solutions.
