The object of this paper is to examine the mathematical consistency and implications of the endochronic theory put forward recently [\textit{K. C. Valanis}, e.g.: Int. J. Plast. 6, No.3, 353-367 (1990; Zbl 0712.73034); Acta Mech. 77, No.3/4, 241-260 (1989; Zbl 0681.73032)]. It was claimed that the constitutive equations of that theory predict elastic material behaviour prior to yielding and permit to deduce the existence of a yield surface. This is however incompatible with the constitutive equations used as the starting point of the theory. It is also shown here that the thermodynamic basis chosen for the theory is inadequate for its later development, since it is shown to lead to inconsistencies. The reviewer feels that if some particular problems are solved in details by using the endochronic theory, then it will be defleted whether there lies any inconsistency and in what stages.
