By saying that he is writing about ``mathematicians [who] are among the gods of twentieth-century mathematics.'' and that ``they had feet of clay like the rest of us.'', the author protects himself against possible critics for his passion of collecting anecdotes about famous mathematicians. Some of these have been witnessed by the author, others have been related to him by witnesses, and others are the result of iterated tellings. Mathematicians presented in their intimate moments, in professional episodes and in other different situations are Stefan Bergman (1898-1977), Abram S. Besicovitch (1891-1970), Kurt Goedel (1906- 1978), Solomon Lefschetz (1884-1972) and Norbert Wiener (1894-1964).
