David, Journé and Semmes have shown that if \(b_ 1\), \(b_ 2\) are ``para-accretive'' functions on \({\mathbb{R}}^ n\), then the ``Tb theorem'' holds: A linear operator T with Caldéron-Zygmund kernel is bounded on \(L^ 2\) iff \(Tb_ 1,T^*b_ 2\in BMO\), and \(M_{b_ 2}TM_{b_ 1}\) has the ``weak boundedness'' property. Conversely, they showed that when \(b_ 1=b_ 2=b,\) para-accretivity of b is necessary for the Tb theorem to hold. The authors' main theorem is: If \(b_ 1,b_ 2\in L^{\infty}({\mathbb{R}}^ n),\) and \(b_ 2\) is not para-accretive, then there exists a linear operator T with Caldéron-Zygmund kernel, satisfying \(Tb_ 1,T^*b_ 2\in L^{\infty}({\mathbb{R}}^ n),\) \(M_{b_ 2}TM_{b_ 1}\) has the weak boundedness property, but T is not bounded on \(L^ 2({\mathbb{R}}^ n)\). Thus, para-accretivity of both \(b_ 1\) and \(b_ 2\) is necessary for the Tb theorem to hold in general. They also give a characterization of para-accretivity in terms of the weak boundedness property, and using it, give a sharp Tb theorem for Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin spaces.
