The authors present a theoretical study of the interaction between the gravitational field and certain gauge fields. Let P(M,G,\(\pi\)) be a principal bundle over the m-dimensional smooth manifold M with n- dimensional structural Lie group G. Let \(C\to M\) be the affine bundle whose sections are the principal connections of P and let \(L\to M\) be the bundle of the Lorentz metrics on M. The authors consider a Lagrangian density \({\mathcal L}: J_ 2L\times_{M}J_ 1C \to \Lambda^ mT^*M\) and study the covariance of \({\mathcal L}\), the corresponding Euler-Lagrange operators, etc. They consider a certain interpretation of the gauge conditions and study the Lagrange densities satisfying the conditions \(\nabla x=0\), \(\delta x=0\). They show that, in this case, \({\mathcal L}={\mathcal L}_{EH}+{\mathcal L}_ 0\) where \({\mathcal L}_{EH}\) is the Einstein-Hilbert Lagrangian density and \({\mathcal L}_ 0\) is an arbitrary generally covariant Lagrangian density on the reduced space \(L\times_{M}J_ 1C\). The Lagrangian densities over \(L\times_{M}J_ 1C\) are studied, obtaining some results concerning the canonical and the metric energy- momentum tensors and their relations with the covariance of the Lagrangian.
