The authors point out that the classical definition of the Jacobi symbol \((a:b)\) is inconvenient for \(b < 0\). They suggest that either \((a:-1)= \mathrm{sgn}\, a\) or \((a:-1)=1,-1\) for \(a\equiv 1, 3\pmod 4\) would be better than the classical \((a:-1)=1\).
