A second order partial differential equation is considered where the Laplacian term is multiplied with a small parameter. A Dirichlet boundary condition is attached to this equation. The problem is treated variationally. There is no specification made upon the existence and uniqueness of the solution of the variational problem, neither as there is made one upon the connection between this solution and the solution of the original problem. The author constructs a new finite element subspace using polynomials of different degrees and a new finite element scheme. The convergence of the scheme and the stability of the reduced difference equation are proved under very restrictive conditions (for example, the solution u(x,y) of the differential equation possesses continuous partial derivatives of the fourth order).
