The authors derive necessary and sufficient conditions for ordinary and strong ellipticity of the field equations in the nonlinear equilibrium theory of incompressible hyperelastic solids and apply them to special deformations and special materials as Neo-Hookean solid, Mooney-Rivlin material, and a body characterized by Ogden's strain energy function. Results pertaining to the latter are represented graphically. Interest in ellipticity stems from the study of localized shear failures on the one hand and material stability on the other hand. The excellently written paper is of interest to researchers in theoretical elasticity.
