The authors carry out a linear stability analysis for a rotating, stratified, self-gravitating plasma. They consider a plane-parallel layer of fluid which rotates about a vertical axis in the presence of a vertical magnetic field. They include the effects of a finite Larmor radius by including a gyroviscous term in the magnetic induction equation. The basic state pressure, density and gravitational potential are functions of the vertical coordinate only. The perturbation velocity and magnetic field are both taken to be solenoidal and the upper and lower boundaries are assumed to be free surfaces. They use a variational method to obtain the dispersion relation for the problem. Their solutions indicate that gyroviscosity and the Coriolis force are stabilizing while Hall currents have a destabilizing influence.
