The main result of this paper is the analogue of Bochner's representation theorem, for charges (bounded finitely additive set functions): ''Any positive definite function p on a semigroup G admits an integral representation by means of a regular charge \(\lambda\) on a suitable algebra \({\mathcal A}.''\) This theorem is used to prove the existence of a charge on an algebra \({\mathcal E}\) of Borel sets in a locally compact abelian group S, that is invariant under translations and surjective group homomorphisms. The cases \(S={\mathbb{R}}^ n\) and \(S={\mathbb{Z}}\) are examined. Finally, the author introduces the notion of the convolution of certain charges and establishes some properties.
