Let D be an open subset of a Stein manifold M having a \(C^ 2\)-boundary. The author shows that if \(H^{q+1}(D,{\mathcal L})=0\) for each locally free sheaf \({\mathcal L}\) on D, then D is q-pseudoconvex. In the case when \(q=0\) the author proves a stronger result: an open subset of a Stein space is Stein iff \(H^ 1(D,{\mathcal L})=0\) for all locally free sheaves on D [this is essentially due to \textit{J. Leiterer}, Math. Nachr. 89, 181-183 (1979; Zbl 0445.32012)]. Moreover, it is shown that it suffices to consider only topologically stably trivial sheaves of certain ranks.
