An inequality used in \textit{L. D. Brown} and \textit{A. Cohen}, Ann. Stat. 2, 963-976 (1974; Zbl 0305.62019) and the author, Ann. Inst. Stat. Math. 30, 407-414 (1978; Zbl 0445.62040) is generalized and another useful inequality derived from it. An application of the latter which provides a more elegant approach to and an improvement over a result in \textit{N. Shinozaki}, Commun. Stat., Theory Methods A7, 1421-1432 (1978; Zbl 0394.62052), is also presented.
