The authors consider the problem of oscillatory shearing of an elastic- plastic, isotropic strain-hardening material under the condition that the motions are infinitesimal, and show that such motions can be sustained without body forces in the special class of materials considered. The development is based on the general thermodynamic theory of finitely deforming elastic-plastic materials proposed by \textit{A. E. Green} and \textit{P. M. Naghdi} [see Acta Mech. 30, 157-162 (1978; Zbl 0393.73015)]. The solutions obtained have the property that the direction of the strain-rate tensor during plastic flow is parallel to the normal to the yield surface in stress space. Details are given for solutions to the Prandtl-Reuss equations, including torsion of a circular bar of elastic- perfectly plastic material, that have this property. This is a clear, well written paper of interest to research engineers.
