    The late author discusses four examples of Dirichlet series with Euler product. The corresponding modular forms are \(\eta^ 3\vartheta_ 3\), \(\eta^ 4\), \(\eta^ 3(z)\vartheta_ 3((z+1))\), and \(\eta^ 3(z)\vartheta_ 3((z-1))\), where \(\eta\) is the Dedekind eta-function and \(\vartheta_ 3(z)=\sum^{\infty}_{n=-\infty}\exp (\pi\) \(in^ 2z)\). The point is that Hecke operators and metrization are not needed to establish the Euler products. Essentially, the modular forms are represented as theta series with grössencharacter attached to the rings of integers in \({\mathbb{Q}}(i)\), \({\mathbb{Q}}(\sqrt{-3})\), and \({\mathbb{Q}}(\sqrt{- 2})\), respectively, and elementary arithmetic in these rings yields the Euler products. \{Reviewer's remark: The proofs can be simplified by stressing the rôle of grössencharacters. The Euler product corresponding to \(\eta^ 4\) has already been obtained by \textit{L. J. Mordell} [Proc. Camb. Philos. Soc. 19, 117-124 (1917)] by means, however, of what later became the Hecke operators.\}
