The author says that a Morita context consists of two rings R and S with identity, two bimodules \({}_ SM_ R\) and \({}_ RN_ S\) and two pairings \(<, >:N\otimes_ SM\to R\) and \([, ]:M\otimes_ RN\to S\) such that \(<n,m>n'=n[m,n']\) and \([m,n]m'=m<n,m'>\) for all n,n' in N and m,m' in M. Let the generalized matrix ring \(\Lambda =\begin{pmatrix} R & N \\ M & S \end{pmatrix}\) be defined by the Morita context, with multiplication induced by the pairings in the obvious way. The main result of the author is that \(0\leq id \Lambda_{\Lambda}-\max (id R_ R\), id \(S_ S\), id \(M_ R\), id \(M_ R\), id \(N_ S)\leq 1\) under the hypothesis that \({}_ SM\) and \({}_ RN\) are flat and that \(N=N Im[, ]\). Examples are given to show that both sides of the inequality can be attained.
