[For part I no information is available.] The authors make use of Fox's H-function and the multivariable H-function of the reviewer and \textit{R. Panda} (R. Srivastava) [J. Reine Angew. Math. 283/284, 265-274 (1976; Zbl 0315.33003)] in the solution of a boundary value problem involving the determination of the angular displacement or twist in a cylindrical shaft with free ends. They also consider several known special cases of their solution (which is rather involved for reproduction in this review). Readers interested in pursuing this line of research may be advised to consult the latest monograph on the subject by the reviewer, \textit{K. C. Gupta} and \textit{S. P. Goyal} [The H-functions of one and two variables with applications (1982; Zbl 0506.33007); especially see Chapter 10 (Section 10.9)].
