A nonvoid subset K of a convex subset W of a Banach space X is called exposed if there exists \(f\in X^*\), \(f\neq 0\), such that \(K=\{x\in W: f(x)=\sup f(W)\}\). Exposed sets play an important role in approximation theory. A sample: If Y is a closed subspace of X and \(x\in X\setminus Y\) then \(y\in P_ Y(x)\) if and only if there exists an exposed subset D of the unit ball of X such that \((x-y)/\| x-y\| \in D\). Obviously, every exposed subset of W is a face of W, but the converse is not generally true. For instance: Every face of the unit ball of C(Q) is exposed if and only if there exists \(\mu \in C(Q)^*\) such that \(S(\mu)=Q.\) In this paper, continuing his previous investigations [Mat. Zametki 28, 205-222 (1980; Zbl 0446.41011), ibid. 28, 707-716 (1980; Zbl 0456.41028); ibid. 32, 325-341 (1982; Zbl 0514.41033)] the author gives characterizations in terms of exposed faces of the unit ball of C(Q) of the elements of best approximation by elements of subspaces of finite codimension, as well as characterizations of these exposed faces.
