Let A denote a \(C^*\)-algebra and G a multiplicative semigroup in A, closed with respect to the involution of A such that the linear span of G is norm dense in A. Then the author considers dilatable functions f:G\(\to B(H)\) \((C^*\)-algebra of bounded operators on a Hilbert space H) defined by the property that \(f(g)=VS_ gV^*\) (g\(\in G)\) for some *- representation \(S:A\to B(K)\) and a bounded operator \(V:K\to H.\) The main result is a characterisation of such functions by the following inequalities \[ (1)\quad \frac{1}{M}\| \sum_{g\in G}f(g)x_ g\|^ 2\leq \sum_{g,h\in G}(f(h^*g)x_ g,x_ h) \] \[ (2)\quad \sum_{g,h\in G}c_ g\bar c_ h(f(h^*g)x,x)\leq M\| x\|^ 2\quad \| \sum_{g\in G}c_ gg\|^ 2\quad (x\in H) \] valid for any finite sequences \(\{x_ g\}\) and \(\{c_ g\}\) in H and \({\mathbb{C}}\), respectively and fixed contants \(M>0\). There also is an application to subnormal operators.
