It is shown that an arbitrary von Neumann algebra M acting in a Hilbert space H with a cyclic and separating vector e may be decomposed into a direct integral of factors \(M_{\phi}\), \(\phi\in \Omega\). The type of M is preserved under this decomposition which is obtained as follows. Let \(\{\) \({\bar \sigma}_ t\}\) be the group of modular automorphisms for \(M,H,e),\) let A be the set of those \(x\in M\) for which \(t\mapsto {\bar \sigma}_ t(x)\) is norm-continuous. Then \((A,{\mathbb{R}},\sigma),\) where \(\sigma_ t={\bar \sigma}_ t| A\), is a \(C^*\)-dynamical system and the vector state \(\psi\) associated with e is a KMS-state. The set \({\mathcal K}(A,\sigma)\) of all KMS-states on A is a Choquet simplex and the set \(\partial {\mathcal K}(A,\sigma)\) of its extremal points is identical with the set of factorial KMS-states on A. The maximal measure with barycenter \(\psi\) is pseudo-concentrated on a suitable subset \(\Omega\) of \(\partial {\mathcal K}(A,\sigma)\), and is also the central measure of \(\psi\) on \({\mathcal K}(A,\sigma)\). This gives a representation of H as the direct integral (in the sense of Wils) of spaces \(H_{\phi}\), \(\phi\in \Omega\), where \((H_{\phi},\pi_{\phi})\) is the GNS-representaion of A associated with \(\phi\). To obtain a decomposition of M into factors \(M_{\phi}=\pi_{\phi}(A)''\), the author uses a decomposition theorem for a left von Neumann algebra associated with an integrable field of left Hilberg algebras.
