The most difficult part in the proof that Wick products of free fields are again relativistic quantum fields in the sense of axiomatic field theory is the proof of the positivity condition. The only complete proof of this fact due to Gårding and Wightman procedes by explicit operator realization of these products in an appropriate Hilbert space. The relevant estimates rely on the fact that the energy-momentum spectrum is a mass hyperboloid. This construction simplifies considerably in the frame of Jacobi-fields [When is a field a Jacobi-field? A characterization of states on tensor algebras. Preprint, CPT-85/P. 1765, CNRS Luminy, Marseille, submitted to Publ. RIMS, Kyoto University.] and thus allows generalizations. The first generalization is that by some extra estimates the energy-momentum spectrum is allowed to fill the closed forward-light cone. Thus generalized free (gf) fields can be treated. The second generalization consists in a more general form of the product itself now specified by a ''contraction'' map \({\mathcal F}\) from the Schwartz space \({\mathcal S}={\mathcal S}({\mathbb{R}}^ 4)\) into a space \({\mathcal F}_ n\) of symmetric functions of n-variables (from R) if in the n-fold product of a gf field A is to be defined. This is exemplified here for the case \(n=2.\) The first point is to specify a class \({\mathcal C}(A)\) of contraction maps F such that indeed this generalized product \(A^ F\) of a gf field A with itself is a well-defined operator-valued distribution. Then those F are characterized such that \(A^ F\) is a relativistic quantum field. The most difficult part is the realization of a locality. The explicit characterization of these contraction maps F is based on the following simplifying assumptions: a) \(A^ F\) is a relativistic quantum field for every gf field A. b) the various notions of ''locality'' in QFT agree for this analysis. The result then is given by an explicit formula for F. The simplest case is (in energy-momentum space) \(F(f)(p_ 1,p_ 2)=\tilde f(p_ 1+p_ 2).\) Then \(A^ F\) corresponds to the Wick-product of the gf field A with itself. If \(:A^ 2:\) denotes Wick ordering of \(_ A(.)A(.)\) the general case can be expressed as \(A^ F(.)=:A^ 2:(F(.)).\) Later in [J. Math. Phys. 25, 3064-3075 (1984; review below)] we have continued this analysis without assuming a) and b). There the various notions of locality and their realization in QFT are analyzed carefully.
