A finite element model is derived for solving the nonlinear system of hydrodynamic equations governing surface wave motion in shallow water, obtained by vertically integrating the continuity and momentum equations, and neglecting viscosity, bottom friction and turbulence. The time integration scheme employed is discussed and the results obtained demonstrate its good stability and accuracy. Several applications are considered, viz an open channel of uniform and linearly varying depth, and wave reflection from a submerged cylinder. The inflow BC is prescribed in terms of the velocity which represents a wavemaker and/or a flow source, while the outflow BC is specified in terms of the water elevation and is adjusted for two cases, a reflecting boundary (finite channel) and a non-reflecting boundary (open-ended channel). The latter reproduces the analytical radiation condition for waves.
