The present paper deals with the application of the principle of minimum power for describing the pathological functional state of the oxygen transport system. The optimal functional parameters of the oxygen transport system under normal conditions have been investigated by the same authors, ibid. 42, 627-645 (1980; Zbl 0434.92007). The present analysis is an extension to include pathological states. The main features of the model considered are: (i) The severity of desease is characterized by source parameters. (ii) The model parameter changes due to a direct pathological effect on the oxygen transport system is expressed in terms of the parameters characterizing the severity of disease. (iii) The pathological functional state of the oxygen transport system is determined depending on the parameters characterizing the severity of disease. The model predictions are in good agreement with the available clinical data in hyperthyroidism, anemia and hypertension. The paper is very useful for further study in this field.
