The author is concerned with the problem of the synthesis of a third order rational function as the driving-point impedance of a one-port network consisting of the series-parallel connection of resistors, capacitors and inductors. Furthermore, the network is such that if \(n_ 1\) and \(n_ 2\) are any subnetworks and if \(n_ 1\) is a subnetwork of \(n_ 2\), the degree of the driving-point impedance of \(n_ 1\) is not greater than the degree of the driving-point impedance of \(n_ 2\). The author establishes a set of sufficient conditions on the coefficients of the function to synthesize the third order rational function. Also a set of necessary conditions for synthesis as described is proven.
