Let A, B be nontrivial groups such that B acts faithfully on the set \(\Omega\), all B-orbits having length greater than 1. Let A Wr B denote the unrestricted wreath product of A and B corresponding to the given action of B on \(\Omega\). Investigations on the center Z(A Wr B) were made by \textit{P. M. Neumann} [Math. Z. 84, 343-373 (1964; Zbl 0122.029)]. The main result of this note determines \(Z_ 2(A Wr B)\) in the case of a transitive action of B on \(\Omega\). Particular cases are given, in which \(Z_ 2(A Wr B)=Z(A Wr B).\) A wreath product construction is used in order to show that every group G can be subnormally embedded in a group X such that \(Z(G)=Z(X)=Z_{\infty}(X)\).
