Let M be a complete noncompact Riemannian manifold without boundary. If \(0<p<\infty\), then M is said to possess property \({\mathcal S}_ p\) if every nonnegative subharmonic function in \(L^ p(M)\) is constant. The purpose of this article is to establish sharp conditions on the curvature of M to ensure the property \({\mathcal S}_ p\) for the cases \(0<p\leq 1\), the cases where \(p>1\) having been settled by \textit{S.-T. Yau} [Indiana Univ. Math. J. 25, 659-670 (1976; Zbl 0335.53041)]. If \(x_ 0\in M\), and \(r_ 0(x)\) denotes the distance to \(x_ 0\), and the Ricci curvature of M at x exceeds \(-c(1+r_ 0(x)^ 2)\times (\log (1+r_ 0(x)^ 2))^{-\alpha}\) for all \(x\in M\) and some \(\alpha >0\), then M satisfies property \({\mathcal S}_ 1\). If \(M\) has dimension n, and there is a positive constant \(\delta(n)\) such that, for some \(x_ 0\in M\), the Ricci curvature exceeds \(-\delta(n)r_ 0(x)^{-2}\) whenever \(r_ 0(x)\) is sufficiently large, then \(M\) satisfies property \({\mathcal S}_ p\) whenever \(0<p<\infty\). In the final section, three examples of manifolds which possess non-constant \(L^ p\) harmonic functions are given.
