In a proof of the existence of a lifting of irreducible cuspial automorphic representations of GSp(4) to automorphic representations of GL(4) (a special case of Langlands' functoriality conjecture) the converse theorem for GL(4) will play a role. That means that one has to consider not only the L- and \(\epsilon\)-functions of the representations twisted with characters, but also those twisted with automorphic representations of GL(2). The present paper gives the local theory of the L-functions for generic representations of GSp(4)\(\times GL(2).\) Moreover the following is proved. Let H be the connected component of the split GO(4). Let \((\sigma_ 1,\sigma_ 2)\) be a pair of irreducible representations of GL(2,k) with the same central character. Then \((\sigma_ 1,\sigma_ 2)\) determines an irreducible representation \(\sigma\) of H(k) and there is a corresponding admissible representation \(\Pi\) (\(\sigma)\) of GSp(4,k) (''Weil lifting''). \(\Pi\) (\(\sigma)\) has a unique standard Whittaker model. If \(\pi\) is an irreducible representation of GL(2,k), we have \(L(\Pi (\sigma)\otimes \pi)=L(\sigma_ 1\otimes \pi) L(\sigma_ 2\otimes \pi)\), and a corresponding equality for the \(\gamma\)-factors.
