Non-ITPFI diffeomorphisms (Q762300)

This paper concerns ergodic diffeomorphisms of \(C^{\infty}\) manifolds which do not preserve and \(\sigma\)-finite measure equivalent to the given smooth measure. In particular the classification of ergodic group actions on a measure space generated by a single ergodic nonsingular transformation up to orbit equivalence is studied. The main result of the paper is the construction of \(III_ 0\) diffeomorphisms of \(T^ 4\) which give rise via the group measure space construction to factors which are not of product type (non-ITPFI). These diffeomorphisms have natural extensions to arbitrary paracompact, connected manifolds of dimension \(\geq 6\).
