The author studies almost contact metric structures on five-dimensional Riemannian manifolds and the existence of compatible metric connections with torsion. Several examples are worked out in detail. An almost contact five-manifold is given by a \(U(2)\)-reduction of the orthonormal frame bundle and has an intrinsic torsion \(\Gamma\). After a short introduction, the author decomposes the space of torsion tensors into irreducible \(U(2)\)-modules, which splits \(\Gamma\) into 10 components sitting in modules \(\mathcal{W}_i\), \(i=1,\dots, 10\). This classifies almost contact metric structures, and the author compares this to other classifications given by Chinea-Gonzalez and Chinea-Marrero. In particular, certain Sasakian and cosymplectic structures occur. Depending on the components of \(\Gamma\), the existence of metric connections with compatible \(U(2)\)-holonomy and three different types of torsion are discussed. The given examples arise from Lie groups with left invariant metrics or certain warped products with Lie groups in dimension four.
