      Let \(G/K\) be a Riemannian symmetric space of the complex type, meaning that \(G\) is a complex semi-simple Lie group, and \(K\) a compact real form. Let \(\Gamma \) be a discrete subgroup of \(G\) that acts freely and cocompactly on \(G/K\). The authors consider, on the compact quotient \(\Gamma \backslash G /K\), the Segal-Bargmann transform, defined in terms of the heat equation, and establish isometry and inversion formulas, parallel to the results they obtained previously for globally symmetric spaces of the complex type [J. Funct. Anal. 254, No. 6, 1575--1600 (2008; Zbl 1137.43005)]. But the proofs are different. The Segal-Bargmann transform of a function \(f\) on \(\Gamma \backslash G/K\) is given by \(F=\exp \bigl({t\over 2}\Delta \bigr)f\), where \(\Delta \) denotes the Laplace-Beltrami operator. The function \(Y\mapsto F(\exp _x Y)\), for \(Y\in T_x(\Gamma \backslash G/K)\), admits an analytic continuation with singularities. The isometry formula takes the following form. For \(f\in L^2(\Gamma \backslash G/K)\), \[ \begin{multlined} \int _{\Gamma \backslash G/K}|f(x)|^2dx =\lim _{R\to \infty } e^{|\rho |^2t} \int _{x\in \Gamma \backslash G/K} \int _{Y\in T_x(\Gamma \backslash G/K),|Y|\leq R} \\ |F(\exp _x iY)|^2 j_x^c(2Y)^{1\over 2} {1\over (\pi t)^{d\over 2}} e^{-{1\over t}|Y|^2}dYdx,\end{multlined} \] where \(j^c\) is the Jacobian of the exponential map.
