For a positive integer \(n\), let \(B_n(x)\) denote the \(n\)th Bernoulli polynomial and set \[ \overline B_n(x)=\begin{cases} B_n(x-\lfloor x\rfloor), &\text{if }x\text{ is not an integer}, \\ 0, &\text{if }x\text{ is an integer}. \end{cases} \] Then the classical Dedekind sums \(S(h,k)\), \(k>0\), \(h\in\mathbb Z\), are defined \[ S(h,k)=\sum_{a=1}^k\overline B_1\left(\frac ak\right) \overline B_1\left(\frac{ah}k\right). \] Because of their connection to the theory of modular forms, the Dedekind sums have been studied extensively by many authors. In the paper under review, the authors considered the generalized Dedekind sums \(S(h,n,k)\) defined by \[ S(h,n,k)=\sum_{a=1}^k\overline B_n\left(\frac ak\right) \overline B_n\left(\frac{ah}k\right). \] The main results are two asymptotic estimates for the sum \[ \sideset\and {'}\to\sum_{h\leq N} S(h,n,k), \] where \(\sideset\and {'}\to\sum_{h\leq N}\) denotes the summation over all positive integers \(h\) such that \(h\leq N\) and \((h,k)=1\).
