This paper deals with a kind of inverse eigenvalue problem. Combining Ulm's method with the Cayley transform, an new method is proposed, which avoids solving the Jacobian equations in each outer iteration. Convergence analysis of this method is provided and the R-quadratic convergence property is proved under the assumption of the distinction of the given eigenvalues. Numerical results show that, comparing with the inexact Cayley transform method, the new Ulm-like method seems more stable.
